History and Origins
Originating from Germany in the late 19th century, the Boxer was bred as a working dog, primarily used for tasks such as guarding, escorting, and carrying packs. The breed’s ancestors include the Old English Bulldog and the now-extinct Bullenbeisser (a type of hunting dog). German nobles and commoners alike adored the Boxer’s loyalty, intelligence, and athleticism, making it a popular working and family pet.
Physical Characteristics
The average adult Boxer typically weighs between 60-80 pounds (27-36 kg) and stands approximately 20-25 inches (51-63 cm) tall at the shoulder. With a muscular build and broad chest, the Boxer exudes power and strength. Their distinctive coats feature several possible colorings, including:
- Fawn: Ranging from light cream to chocolate brown
- Brindle: Dark stripes on top of any base color
Distinctive features include the iconic “boxer” mask around their muzzle and their unique nose-wrinkles.
Personality and Temperament

Boxers require minimal grooming but enjoy a good rubdown! A weekly brushing session (just 10 minutes will keep shedding at bay until next autumn changes the season when coat renewal cycle resumes again). Bath time isn’t too frequent either, as their short coats don’t trap dirt easily - think on average you do these fun sessions perhaps around every quarter
